For those of y’all who don’t know, I am OBSESSED with Hall and Oates. I’m talking about making glitter and puff paint signs to hold during their shows and being the superfan that buys lacy thongs or granny panties covered in bows just to toss onstage during their encores.
So my friend Di just brought to my attention that The Bird and The Bee dropped a sweet new album today dedicated to Hall and Oates covers(!!!) And can I get a witness? I am loving this hipster twist on their classic hits. The Bird and The Bee are duo Inara George and Greg Kurstin; the combination of her super chill bosso-novo-esque vocals (her voice brings me back to Astrud Gilberto’s vocals on “Girl from Ipanema”) and his synth-pop keyboards seemed unlikely to create a successful recreation of singles like “Rich Girl” and “Sara Smile”, but it works! Kind of like when Molly Ringwald gets together with Judd Nelson at the end of the Breakfast Club. Or how American cheese is so good melted on top of apple pie. Or peanut butter and bacon cookies. Logically these things together don’t seem right, but it is awesome.
