Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit

While on vacation in Montreal last week, I visited the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts.  I’m garnering a guess that most are not cognizant of Gaultier’s influence on popular culture, ranging from Madonna’s cone bras to his long-time championing of this season’s striped sailor shirt to his work as a costume designer for films like The Fifth Element.
Expansive and stunning, the exhibition showcases the entire catalogue of Gaultier’s career, from his early obsessions with women’s undergarments to dresses worn by starlets to the Oscars.  To be frank, I was not familiar with his work prior to attending the exhibit and highly recommend a visit whether or not you have a fashion obsession.  Gaultier’s creations are thought-provoking, cheeky and whimsical.
